Space Science Intern

OpenRemote

3-6 months

Overview

We are seeking a Space Science Intern to join our team at FloLabs, where you will contribute to hands-on initiatives connected to space exploration, planetary defense, deep-space robotics, AI, and emerging aerospace innovation. This internship is designed for curious and motivated individuals who want to explore the future of space systems while contributing to real projects, research, digital platforms, and strategic communication.

As a Space Science Intern, you may support research and development related to space science, robotics, autonomous systems, biosignature detection, advanced sensing, and AI-driven space applications. You may also help organize project concepts, prepare research-backed materials, and contribute to public-facing space initiatives that support FloLabs’ long-term innovation vision.

This role is not limited to technical research. Interns may also assist with building and refining space-focused websites, project pages, reports, presentations, and outreach materials. These materials may support conversations with space companies, research collaborators, innovation partners, and organizations such as NASA.

Before contributing to active projects, selected interns may complete our custom Space Science Masterclass, built from curated free resources from NASA, ESA, technical educators, researchers, and other public learning sources. This helps interns build a shared foundation in space science, robotics, AI, and mission-focused thinking.

This internship is ideal for students, early-career builders, and interdisciplinary learners who are passionate about space science, robotics, aerospace innovation, AI, scientific discovery, and frontier research.

Key responsibilities

  • Participate in research and development related to space science, planetary defense, robotics, and space exploration.
  • Contribute to AI- and robotics-based initiatives related to space discovery, biosignature detection, advanced sensing, and autonomous systems.
  • Support research, simulations, concept development, systems exploration, and technical documentation.
  • Assist with building, improving, and organizing FloLabs’ space-focused websites, project pages, and public-facing innovation platforms.
  • Help develop content, messaging, and structure for initiatives that may be presented to space companies, research institutions, NASA-related contacts, and innovation partners.
  • Support outreach preparation for conversations, meetings, and potential collaborations with aerospace organizations and other relevant industry groups.
  • Help promote FloLabs’ space initiatives through research-backed content, visuals, summaries, reports, and strategic communication materials.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams across engineering, AI, robotics, science, design, strategy, and innovation.
  • Assist with turning ambitious ideas into organized project concepts, presentations, reports, and digital assets.
  • Participate in team meetings, brainstorming sessions, and project reviews, contributing ideas and helping move assigned tasks forward.

Qualifications and skills

  • Strong interest in space science, aerospace innovation, planetary defense, robotics, astronomy, physics, or interplanetary exploration.
  • Curiosity, initiative, and willingness to learn unfamiliar concepts, tools, workflows, and technical topics.
  • Interest in contributing to both technical and strategic work in a fast-moving research and innovation environment.
  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Helpful academic backgrounds include aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, robotics, physics, astronomy, computer science, data science, or related fields.
  • Familiarity with programming, simulations, CAD, orbital mechanics, robotics, AI tools, scientific research, or technical writing is preferred.
  • Experience with research, writing, design, website content, technical communication, or project documentation is a plus.
  • Interest in helping build not only research ideas, but also the digital presence, visibility, and communication materials around those ideas.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to organize complex ideas into clear, useful project outputs.
  • Comfortable working in a remote-first and collaborative environment.
